NLGI class (greases)

Beschreibung

How the NLGI class determines the consistency of lubricating greases

The NLGI class is a standardized characteristic value that describes the consistency of a lubricating grease. The abbreviation stands for “National Lubricating Grease Institute”, which developed the classification. The so-called penetration value is measured – the lower it is, the harder the grease is. The scale ranges from NLGI 000 (very soft) to NLGI 6 (very hard).

Relevance in the industry

In industry, automotive engineering and machine maintenance, the NLGI class is an indispensable parameter when selecting lubricating greases. It determines how well a grease adheres, how it behaves in the event of temperature changes and whether it is suitable for certain bearings or seals. Especially in sensitive areas – e.g. central or rolling bearing lubrication – the choice of the right NLGI class is crucial for the service life of machines and components.

Fragen & Antworten (FAQ)

What does NLGI 2 mean for lubricating greases?
NLGI 2 is the most commonly used class for multi-purpose greases. It is a medium-hard grease that is well suited for use in vehicles, bearings and machines.

What do I need to consider when choosing the NLGI class?
The operating conditions are decisive: softer greases such as NLGI 000 or 00 are often used for automatic centralized lubrication, while NLGI 2 is usually used for bearings. Temperature, speed and sealing systems play an important role.

Is a higher NLGI class automatically better?
No. A consistency that is too firm can lead to poor lubrication in some systems. It is important that the grease is suitable for the respective application – neither too soft nor too hard.
