ILSAC – International Motor Oil Specification for Gasoline Engines
ILSAC stands for International Lubricant Standardization and Approval Committee. The organization was founded jointly by the US and Japanese automotive industries and develops standardized requirements for engine oils for petrol engines.
The ILSAC classification supplements the API specification and places particular emphasis on fuel economy, environmental compatibility, engine cleanliness and compatibility with exhaust aftertreatment systems.
Where does ILSAC come into play – and what does it do for you?
If you are looking for an engine oil for modern petrol cars, the ILSAC marking is a reliable indicator of quality. It shows that the oil not only meets the technical requirements, but also the energy efficiency-related requirements of international manufacturers.
BASINOL engine oils that are ILSAC-certified are ideal for use in modern petrol engines, including those with hybrid drive or start-stop systems.
What is the difference between API and ILSAC?
The API specification (e.g. API SP) originates from the American Petroleum Institute and defines general minimum requirements for engine oils – divided into “S” for petrol engines and “C” for diesel engines.
ILSAC, on the other hand, is based on this API standard, but supplements it with additional requirements such as fuel economy, longer oil change intervals and exhaust gas standard compatibility. This means that ILSAC oils are always API-certified – but not every API oil meets the ILSAC criteria.
Which ILSAC classes are currently available?
ILSAC GF-6 is currently the valid standard, subdivided into
Does my oil have to be ILSAC certified?
If your vehicle manual explicitly specifies ILSAC (e.g. for Japanese or US manufacturers such as Toyota, Honda, Ford or GM), you should use a correspondingly approved oil. It can also make sense for European vehicles if you are particularly focused on fuel efficiency and modern engine technology.
BASINOL offers numerous engine oils with ILSAC GF-6A/B approval – ideal for modern gasoline engines with turbocharging, direct injection or hybrid drive.
