Friction modifiers – friction-reducing additives for greater efficiency
Friction modifiers are special additives that are used in engine oils, gear oils and industrial lubricants to specifically reduce sliding friction between metal surfaces. By forming a thin lubricating film, they ensure that moving parts glide smoothly past each other – even at high temperatures and under pressure.
Why are friction modifiers important?
Friction generates heat, wears out components and consumes energy unnecessarily. Friction modifiers help to avoid exactly that: They optimize the lubricating effect and reduce fuel consumption, especially in modern downsizing and hybrid engines, where low friction losses are crucial. They also contribute to shift quality and smooth running in automatic transmissions (ATF) and CVT oils.
BASINOL lubricants contain precisely matched friction reducers that ensure noticeable increases in efficiency in numerous applications.
How do friction modifiers work in engine oil?
Friction modifiers are usually organic molecules or molybdenum compounds that are deposited on the metal surfaces in the engine and form a thin lubricating film structure. This reduces direct metal-to-metal contact – friction is reduced. This ensures smoother engine running, less wear and improved energy efficiency, especially at partial load and low speed.
Are friction modifiers contained in all engine oils?
Not necessarily. They are used particularly frequently in so-called fuel economy oils (e.g. 0W-20 or 5W-30), where maximum fuel economy is important. High-viscosity or older oil specifications often do not require these additives to the same extent. BASINOL uses friction modifiers specifically where they really improve efficiency and service life.
Can friction modifiers also have disadvantages?
Yes, in certain applications – such as wet clutch systems in motorcycles or special ATF formulations – too low a friction coefficient can lead to clutch slippage. It is therefore important that the friction modifiers are precisely matched to the area of application, as is the case with BASINOL products.
