NMMA – Quality standard for marine engine oils
NMMA stands for National Marine Manufacturers Association, the US association of boat and marine engine manufacturers. The NMMA sets its own certification standards for two-stroke and four-stroke oils in outboard and marine engines. The best-known specifications are NMMA TC-W3 (two-stroke oil) and FC-W (four-stroke oil for boat engines).
What is the significance of NMMA for marine lubricants?
In the maritime sector, different load profiles apply than in road traffic: water, corrosion, high speeds and continuous load place special demands on the oil. NMMA-certified oils must pass extensive tests, for example with regard to corrosion protection, cleanliness of pistons and bearings, emissions and environmental compatibility.

What does TC-W3 mean for two-stroke oils?
TC-W3 is currently the most important NMMA standard for water-cooled two-stroke outboard engines. Only oils that pass extensive bench and field tests may carry the NMMA certificate with registration number.
Are there also NMMA standards for four-stroke engines?
Yes, the most important is NMMA FC-W, specifically for four-stroke outboard engines. Among other things, it specifies requirements for shear stability, water resistance, rust protection, foaming and air separation behavior. Oils with FC-W certification are particularly resistant to moisture ingress and longer downtimes, which often occur on boats.
Is NMMA certification mandatory for my boat?
In many cases, yes – especially if the outboard motor manufacturer specifies this in the operating instructions. The use of non-certified oils can lead to loss of warranty or engine damage, especially with two-stroke engines. Therefore, look for the official NMMA logo and the corresponding TC-W3 or FC-W code.
