Base number (TBN)

Beschreibung

Total base number (TBN)

The total base number (TBN) indicates how well an engine oil can neutralize harmful acids produced during combustion. It is measured in mg KOH/g oil and determines the oil’s ability to prevent corrosion, deposits and oil ageing. A higher base number means a stronger neutralizing power and a longer protective effect.

Why is the base number important?

The base number plays a particularly important role in diesel engines and commercial vehicles, as the fuel has a higher sulphur content and more acidic residues are produced. Modern BASINOL engine oils are formulated with optimally matched additive packages to ensure a long oil life and maximum engine protection.

Fragen & Antworten (FAQ)

What is the ideal base number for my vehicle?

– Car engines: 7-10 mg KOH/g for optimum exhaust gas cleaning
– Commercial vehicles & heavy-duty engines: 10-15 mg KOH/g for long oil change intervals
– Industrial lubricants: Values adapted to the application

What happens if the base number is too low?

If the base number drops too low, the engine oil can no longer neutralize acids. This leads to corrosion, increased wear and deposits in the engine. A timely oil change with a BASINOL high-performance oil prevents such damage.

Can the base number be increased with additives?

Yes, there are special oil additives that increase the base number. However, it is often better to use a high-quality engine oil with an optimally balanced base number in order to avoid a chemical imbalance.
